Matthew Gartshore is a highly regarded pianist, music director, and educator based in the Waterloo-Wellington region of Ontario. Known for his artistry, inspiring teaching, and dedication to community music, he brings a wealth of experience and passion to every aspect of his work.
Currently, Matthew teaches piano and music theory at the Guelph School of Music and serves as the Music Director at St. Andrew’s Memorial Anglican Church in Kitchener. As a performer, he is celebrated for his work as a soloist and collaborator, appearing in recitals, operas, and benefit concerts. Locally, he has performed at venues such as the Kitchener Public Library and the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Noon Hour Recital Series. Internationally, his performances have taken him to stages in the United States and Italy, earning him acclaim for his expressive and musical interpretations.
At St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Matthew integrates traditional and contemporary elements into worship services, fostering a vibrant musical environment. His leadership in choir direction upholds a tradition of excellence while engaging the congregation and broader community.
Matthew’s contributions extend beyond performance and teaching. Socially conscious, he has participated in benefit concerts supporting causes such as the 2019 KW ORMTA Gala Recital, which raised funds for the Community Music School, the Save the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony initiative, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. These efforts underscore his dedication to using music as a force for community connection and positive change
Matthew holds a Master’s degree in Piano Performance from Syracuse University, where he studied on a full scholarship. As part of his teaching assistantship, he acted as an instructor for class piano and the repetiteur for the opera workshop and several vocal studios. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from McMaster University, graduating summa cum laude. He also earned an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Currently, he is an active member of the Kitchener-Waterloo branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA) and a member of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO).
